Did I forget it was here?

Wowee! I drop to my belly and wiggle in. My jaws open up and—chomp! I back out into the room, my tail high and proud.

I give the bone a few more chomps and—squeeeak-squeeeak-squeeeak.

What? I drop that bone, and my tail wilts.

My new bone doesn’t squeak. And it doesn’t taste like a rubbery toy. This is a toy bone.

For the rest of the day, I’m stuck inside. I pace around the house, trying not to think about how much I want that bone. The real one.

I find my old tennis ball upstairs. I tuck it behind Hattie’s pillow and play a game. I snuggle in her blankets, pop out, and grab the ball. I do this over and over. But it’s not as fun as digging up my bone.

My tail slumps again. There must be something else I can do.

Aha! On the floor, I discover the fuzzy toy that used to be a bear. Now it’s only the upper half, with one arm.

I nose it under Hattie’s rumpled sweatshirt, then race around the room once, twice, three times. I throw myself onto the sweatshirt. I pull it off the used-to-be bear, ready to chomp!

But at the last second, I stop myself. I don’t want to play with toys.

I want my bone.
